I lived in Japan from 2001 to 2004,
learning to speak the language,
to eat the food, and to integrate
with the society. I came away with
the realization that Japanese
culture is a paradox. Traditional Japan
finds a place with the
ultra-modern. History is forgotten, yet it is
everywhere. Things aren’t always as
they seem. Through digital
layering and collage, this series of
works documents the dualities
and ironies I encountered in my
exploration of the Japanese culture.
